Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery

Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery

Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is the collection of megalithic tombs in Ireland, with some tombs dating back to over 3,700 B.C. That's over 5,800 years ago, and dates these tombs older than the pyramids in Egypt. Although archaeologists have recorded over 60 tombs here, only 30 are visible.

The tombs are classified by archaeologists as being part of the Irish Passage Tomb tradition, although none of the passages to the tombs have a lintel/roof covering.

Structurally, the tombs would have originally have been constructed of a central dolmen-like megalith, with 5 upright boulders (orthostats) supporting a capstone. These act as an enclosure for the burial chamber. Surrounding the dolmen was a circle, 12 to 15 metres in diameter, of 30 to 40 boulders

One of the tombs (Tomb 51), erected circa 3,500 B.C. has a unique box-like chamber.

As the tombs are located in a grassy field with uneven ground, visitors are advised to wear appropriate shoes or boots and access may be difficult for people with a physical disability.

Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is located 5km south west of Sligo town. Click the map pin icon to view the location on a map.
